Gaming has always been an important part of how humanity interacts with the world. With the rise of modern technology and pop culture, games have taken on a wide variety of forms. Despite how diverse games can be–roleplay, tabletop, and video games–they all share one important aspect: collaboration. Growing up, my brother and I bonded over this collaboration of play. Since then, gaming has become an important part of who I am.

Player 2 explores that sibling bond, childhood imagination, and adult nostalgia. I adopted a soft, semi-realistic style to push into that nostalgia, making it feel like a storybook of memories. I wanted to take these memories of games we played together, representing us as being immersed into each world as we felt playing in the moment. Though each game we explored differed in genre, strategy, and difficulty, they all left a lasting impression on our relationship. Each piece represents a different title, including but not limited to: Clue, The Legend of Zelda, and Dungeons and Dragons.

The name Player 2 is inspired by the multiplayer aspect of collaborative games, as well as sibling rivalry. Being the younger sibling, I was often stuck being the second player. Although I hated this as a kid, I now find it endearing. When there are two players, you work together towards a common goal; you need that second person to succeed. When I played games by myself I would often ask my brother for help, counting on his aid for success. Now as an adult, I know that I can always count on him when needed.

My hope with this project is that viewers will be able to see themselves in the work; to be able to put themselves and those they care about into these characters. Gaming in all its forms can be enjoyed by anyone, and it is through this enjoyment that lifelong bonds can be formed.
